SWEET GRANADILLA
Common Name: Sweet Granadilla
Botanical Name: Passiflora ligularis
Specimens From: India
Specimens Weight: 85 gm [3 oz] (average wgt per fruit)
Sweet Granadilla looks similar to the yellow passion fruit as they are under the same family. It is native to the Andes mountain of South America.
Sweet granadilla may look like the common passion fruit (yellow variety) but there are several differences. The tip of this fruit ending in the stem. The seeds are surrounded by transparent jelly-liked pulp instead of orange pulp. The outer shell are much harder and it does not wrinkle when ripens.
Sweet granadilla is yellow to orange in color on the exterior. It may not be as popular but the taste is still as sweet with the unmistakable aroma of the passion fruit. The numerous black seeds are edible though it is slightly crunchy and hard. Stay sweet and try it!
Fruit: Sweet Granadilla; Passiflora ligularis; Passifloraceae.
Other fruits in the same family: Passion Fruit[yellow rind], Passion Fruit[purple rind].

I have a weakness for passiflora flowers - one of the most beautiful flowers in nature, I think. Too bad they are not hardy enough to grow in my garden.

I've seen these used in some recipes but never thought to eat them in their raw state.

ReplyDeleteThanks Fruity! Love your posts.
I just tried one today at work and had no idea what I was in for. IT was really weird looking on the inside - and to be honest, the jelly inside looked quite disgusting, but it actually wasn't too bad. And I also didn't realize when I was eating it that it was a type of passionfruit.
ReplyDeleteA lady here from Columbia told me I was very brave for trying it. :)
